The aim of this pamphlet is to strip away the layers of myth and misunderstanding that surround discussions on China and its growing role in the world economy. Some of these myths are simply the result of an inability by Western commentators to comprehend Chinese reality but, as we shall see in other cases, China also serves as a convenient scapegoat for economic problems that should instead be laid at the door of Western ruling elites.
